Trekking Information

The ponies are now kept all year round at Springfield Farm just outside Edinburgh . For directions please see our
Contact Us page.
We do not just offer a pony trek, we include the entire experience of helping to catch, groom and tack up the ponies as well as post-trek pony care. This means that you will gain much more from a trek with us than just a fun ride out in beautiful surroundings!
You will need:
- Boots or sturdy shoes with a small heel suitable for riding in (not trainers)
- Warm clothes including comfortable trousers, (jodhpurs, tracksuit bottoms or leggings, jeans are best avoided as they are usually uncomfortable to ride in and get very wet if it rains!)
- Gloves in cold weather
- Waterproofs (jacket and trousers if possible)
- A packed lunch
- Payment for the trek (cheques payable to EUEPTS)
We provide you with hard hats and wellies if you cannot bring your own.
You may bring your own hard hat if it meets current safety requirements (PASO15/BSEN1384).
A Trek Leader will contact you the night before your trek to arrange a meeting point and time.
Please note that we have to enforce a weight limit of 12.5 stone (79kg) due to the size of our ponies. This is subject to change during the winter
What We Offer
Off-Peak Day Trek
Non-Students - £30
Students and Under 18's - £20
From September-May the ponies trek at the weekends only, although if you would like to trek at another time please contact us and we will try to accomodate you. Treks last 2-3 hours.
You will either be picked up in the centre of Edinburgh or will be asked to meet your trek leader at the field, which you can travel to either by car or by bus. The day including your trek will typically start at about 10am and we aim to be finished with the ponies before 4pm.
Peak Time Treks
From the third week in June until the beginning of September the ponies trek everyday (except Fridays). During this time we offer:
DAY TREKS - £40
Day treks typically include 3-4 hours of trekking. You will stop about half-way through for a rest and some lunch at a nice picnic spot before heading home again. This is a great option if you have the time, as you will really get to know your pony and get the most out of the Exmoor Pony Trekking experience!
HALF DAY TREKS - £30
These usually last 2-3 hours and incorporate parts of out day trek routes. Depending on when your trek has been scheduled for, a lunch break can be included. A good option for families with children over 12 still at school during the day.
EVENING TREKS - £20
Our shortest trek during the summer, lasting between 1-2 hours. Great to unwind after work or after a fun day experiencing Edinburgh and the festival. Mostly, these run from 6pm, although timings can be adjusted to suit you.
Lead Rein 'Pootles'
£12-15, arranged with your trek leaader on booking
Short lead rein rides for children or those who have never ridden but would like to give it a try can be arranged on request throughout the year.
You will be in the saddle for up to an hour and will be lead by one of our Trek Leaders.
This is a very flexible option and is an excellent way of discovering what the section can offer you.
