The Pentlands, Edinburgh Pony Trekking

During term time (September till May) the ponies trek at Swanston. These treks run at the weekends only, although if you would like to trek at another time please contact us and we will try to accommodate you. You will be asked to meet your trek leader at the field, which you can travel to either by car or by bus (see our Find Us page for details).

Please Note: Bookings for treks open 3 weeks prior to the trekking date and close 48 hours before the trek’s start time. With our new automated booking system, we cannot yet block bookings made within 48 hours of the trek starting – however, these will not be honoured, and we will do our best to make people aware of this in the event of bookings made after the deadline.

Weight limit: please note that due to the size of our ponies we have a strict weight limit of 70 kg (154 lb). Please provide an accurate weight including clothing, helmet, and boots (everything you will be wearing while riding), so we can match you with a suitable steed. We reserve the right to verify your weight and cancel your trek if we do not have a suitable pony for you. Please also note that our reservoir treks have a reduced weight limit of 65 kg (143 lb).

Please also note that while we try to avoid cancelling treks wherever possible, we do reserve the right to do so, for example due to unforeseen weather events, pony illness/injury, or incorrectly reported trekker age, weight, or ability. We endeavour to give as much notice as possible in the rare instances where we have to cancel. In these instances, we cannot take responsibility for travel costs incurred should you have already travelled to, or started travelling to our location.

Advanced  Morning Trek

Our morning treks are suitable for adults and children over 12 who are advanced and intermediate trekkers. The ride will involve some cantering. You will be in the saddle for 2 – 3 hours. ​

2-3 hour Advanced and Intermediate Trek

Please note that we have 6 spaces on each of our AM treks, 3 of which are reserved for rider 67-70kg. However, if you are <67kg please feel free to book a 67-70kg space if it is available when <67kg is sold out.

Pony Trekking

Beginner and Novice Afternoon Trek

These treks last 1-1½ hours and are aimed at beginner and novice riders, although more advanced riders are welcome to join if they are happy to ride at a slower pace. These are also ideal for children over 8 years of age who are ready to ride off the lead rein.*

Reservoir Treks

​Our reservoir treks run for a limited time** after the Easter break (April and May). These 6 hour long treks are suitable for advanced riders only, and there will be a lunch break half way. The reservoir treks are a great way to explore Bonaly and Glencorse reservoirs and enjoy the splendid scenery just out side of Edinburgh.

Pony Trekking

30-45 Minute Trekking

Short lead rein rides for children or those who have never ridden and are a little nervous but would like to give it a try.

30-45 minutes £22 per person

*Children must be over 4 years of age to ride with us and all children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. All children under the age of 8 will be lead by a trek leader at all times.

Please note we have a strict weight limit of 11 stone (70kg). All riders over 12 years old will be asked to step on the scales, as each of our ponies have their own individual weight limit.
